How to get to US Universities with Low High School Score

If you are a Cambodian, there are chances that you might be struggling with getting admitted to universities abroad, especially those in the United States. Unlike universities in other developed countries, US colleges look for applicants with very good high school score, specifically in the eleventh and twelfth grades. Some colleges even ask for High School Certificate.

Presumably, you are holding a not-so-well result and you wish to be in one of those US competitive colleges. You thought it is all over because you can not go back to improve your score. But at the same time, you should not feel that hopeless, because US education system is not as narrow as you might think it is. There are many initiative points just to earn a US bachelor degree.

1. Community College

One of which begins with investing two years for an Associate of Art (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree which is offered by community colleges. They also have technical and vocational programs with close links to secondary/high schools, community groups, and employers in the local community. You can find community colleges in every US states, ranging from urban to a small rural village. Community colleges welcome applicants with any quality of high school score and standardized tests (SAT/ACT) at a very low price cost. Starting from an annual price of $7,000 to $15,000, it is much cheaper compared to those four-year institutions which charge quadruple. Aside from being affordable, its academic flexibility far outweighs many universities as it involves with fewer students and more specific fields. They are those which introduced biomedical technology, biotechnology, robotics, laser optics, internet, and computer technologies into US college education system. So community college is most likely the best place for you to build up your academic background and what’s best is that after two years, you can try your luck of entering one of those competitive universities.

2. University Preparation/Foundation Program

If you think spending two years improving your academic background takes too long, then University Preparation/Foundation Program is best for you. This program lasts for six, nine or eleven months depending on how well you can use English. Not only it doesn’t require a very good high school score, neither TOEFL nor IELTS is needed. So you do not have to worry about completing any English courses in advance because you will only end up doing the same thing once you enroll. What this program differs from the community college is how short it takes to be qualified into enrolling any of the competitive colleges in the US. It prepares you for special training on three very important skills which are Exam and Language preparation (Academic Writing and Grammar, ACT Preparations, TOEFL skills, etc.), Skills required to be ready for US University/College (Advanced College Lecture Series, Critical Reading and Analysis, University Applicant Workshop, etc.), and Specialized subjects (US History, American Culture and Communications, International Law, Science and Technology, etc.). Other extracurricular activities such as sports, student clubs, trips, and excursions are also included to help bind you with the campus lifestyle. Once you finish the course, you are 100% guaranteed of becoming a freshman in one of its partner universities, equivalent to a higher chance of being accepted to non-partner universities. Some of the partner universities are University of Arkansas, San Francisco State University, St John’s University, Montana State University, etc.
